| | 08/24/2009 | High Construction Awarded Contract to Build Manheim Township Public Library |
Monday, August 24, 2009
LANCASTER, PA — High Construction Company was awarded the contract, as the project's prime contractor, to build a one-story, $5.3 million Public Library for Manheim Township in Lancaster County, Pa. The new, 20,692-square-foot library will be built in the Overlook Park at 2095 Fruitville Pike in Manheim Township.
The new library has long been a dream for many members of the Manheim Township community and now is on its way to becoming a reality. The library will transform its hilltop setting from a rocky knoll to a pinnacle of knowledge. In keeping with the area's rich agricultural heritage, Kimmel Bogrette Architecture + Site took the inspiration for the library's design from agrarian references. The building's profile is interpreted as a collection of "book barns" and features a silo that houses the Children's Story-Time Room. The silo is also already reflected in the library's new logo. The exterior design features stone and vertically placed fiber-cement siding, and metal roofing. Gable-end windows are narrow and elongated, resembling the vertical ventilation slits of barns. The grounds will be landscaped with native foliage and will include outdoor reading areas, a terrace, and gardens. Sustainable design methods and materials will be incorporated into the construction of the new building.
The farm theme continues inside, with exposed beams from the timber-framed construction, stamped concrete flooring that simulates wood plank, and a rolling door entrance to a Program Center that resembles a barn door. Other features of the new library include wireless Internet access, the flexible-use Program Center seating 200 people, a Teen Center, a Used Bookstore & Cafe, self-check-out stations, outdoor lockers for after-hours material pick-ups, and a separate children's library.
The new Library is scheduled to welcome its first visitors in July of 2010.

| | 09/30/2008 | High Construction Completes Sustainably Designed Academic Building |
Tuesday, September 30, 2008 LANCASTER, PA—High Construction Company completed the construction of Lancaster Mennonite School's new sustainably designed Rutt Academic Center in Lancaster, Pa.
The 45,000 square foot academic building features classrooms, offices, conference rooms, and many sustainable design elements.
One of the most intriguing sustainable components is the geothermal heating and cooling system which uses the Earth's temperature as a source of heat or as a coolant. The highest efficiency, single-stage equipment that was available on the market was specified and installed for the project. This system, coupled with an extensive monitoring system which can be accessed remotely, puts the building on the cutting edge of new sustainable technologies. The building also includes occupancy sensors that control the lights and are interlocked into the heating and cooling system to increase efficiency by preventing unoccupied rooms from being supplied with heated, cooled, or outside air—dependent on the season.
A few of the other sustainable features include ample natural sunlight; additional energy-saving insulation; a GreenGrid roof garden system and a heat-reflective and energy efficient White TPO (Themosplastic Polyolefin) roof; low Consumption urinals and toilets with sensor operated flushometers; recycled floor tiles that will not require waxing; radiant heat flooring; and use of native species in landscaping which conserves water.

| | 07/18/2008 | High Construction Completes Maintenance Facility Slated for LEED Silver |
Friday, July 18, 2008
LANCASTER, PA— High Construction Company completed the construction of a new $4.1 million vehicle and equipment maintenance facility that will meet the LEED silver standard.
The facility was designed by Greenfield Architects Ltd., Lancaster, Pa., and built for High Concrete Group in Denver, Pa. High Construction served as the design-builder for the project.
The 18,370-square-foot building features thermally efficient precast concrete sandwich wall panels, which contain a large portion of recycled materials. The roof is composed of CarbonCast double tees made with non-corrosive carbon fiber flange reinforcement. The TPO roofing system features a solar reflectance index of 78, which adds to the energy efficiency of the building.
Inside, sustainable design concepts abound, including: non-emergency lighting that automatically turns off during non-business hours; a water reclamation system used for fleet washing equipment, the HVAC systems minimize or eliminate the emission of compounds that contribute to ozone depletion and global warming; metering panels monitor energy usage for lighting, HVAC equipment, and plug loads; and a direct line of sight to the outdoors is viewable from 90% of the occupied areas of the building.
Even the construction process itself featured sustainable practices. High Construction recycled or salvaged a minimum of 75% of non-hazardous construction debris by implementing a construction waste management plan to divert construction debris away from landfills and incinerators, and re-direct it back to the manufacturing process. The total construction waste diverted from landfills weighed in at 45.5 tons.

Thursday, May 29, 2008
LANCASTER, PA—High Construction Company completed the construction of the new sustainably-designed Allentown Turnpike Service Plaza, and diverted more than 95 percent of demolition and construction waste from landfills in the process. The plaza opens to the public for the Memorial Day holiday.
The Allentown Service Plaza, the busiest of 21 rest stops along the 532-mile Pennsylvania turnpike, was transformed into a modern, environmentally friendly facility that is easily accessible for all patrons.
The $11 million project included the demolition of the existing 1960s-era building and small food service outbuildings, and reconstruction of a new, 21,000 square foot plaza (in the same footprint) and related site improvements. More than 1800-plus tons of material was recycled during the project; and some of it was crushed and reused onsite.
Some of the facility's sustainable design concepts include the roof's highly reflective TPO membrane; light-colored concrete pavement parking to reduce the heat island effect; landscaping with indigenous plants which conserves water; low-emitting paints and sealants; use of more than 80% of Forest Stewardship Council's certified lumber products; 30 percent wastewater reduction from waterless urinals, aerated sensor-operated facets, and low-consumption toilets; and ample natural daylighting to reduce use of lighting fixtures.
