Elizabethtown’s new public library features state-of-the-art technological, electrical, and mechanical systems. An elevator provides easy access to each of the building’s three floors. The first floor, featuring large birch column surrounds and molding, houses the library’s main collections, a reading room, a periodical room, and a circulation desk. The second floor is largely devoted to the children’s library. Here, an unusual serpentine wall separates the carpeted stack area from the reading area that features a blue and green rubber tile floor and a round turreted “kids’ castle,” complete with lookout windows. Two large community rooms with folding partitions and a kitchen for catered events are located in the basement. Large windows sweep across three sides of the building, filling the interior with natural light. In the courtyard is a child-friendly amphitheater featuring concrete pavers with an interlocking gecko design. The library was built on the foundation of a former bank on the main street in Elizabethtown, PA, and incorporates a renovated 1790s stone house.
